A Day in the Life: Music Studio Intern

BeatBrdg Resources – Industry Sector – Recording & Distribution

As a music studio intern, no two days are the same. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities for learning and growth. To get a better understanding of the day to day tasks and respnsibilites are like, we asked Rhea, a 2023 BeatBrdg intern and undergraduate student from Bruges to walk us through what a typical day in her internship looked like.

6:30 AMWake up and get ready for the day. Grab breakfast and coffee before heading out the door.

8:00 AM – Arrive at the studio and check in with the studio manager to get a rundown of the day’s schedule and tasks, and learn about my assignments, and who will be in the studios today.

8.30AM – The first task we normally do is set up the studio for the day’s recording sessions. This always varies depending on the equipment we’ll be using, the band or artists that have booked the space, and the engineers preferences. We move the equipement, set up microphones, and then once thre set up is right, work through the process of ensuring all necessary cables are plugged in and functioning properly.

10.00AMThings get exciting as we welcome the first artist of the day and help them get settled in the studio. I take the extra equipement that they have brought into the studio, and the engineer decides how and where to set it up. Today it’s the artists own microphones, sequencer, and guitars.

11.00AM – I sit in and assist the engineer with recording and mixing. We mark all the key levels on the desk for each track, and I learn about adding EQ and compression, across multiple tracks, whch is not easy!

1.00PM – We take a quick break for lunch in the break room to relax and recharge, and I check my messages before heading back to the studio.

2.00PM – My first afternoon meeting is a quick check-in with the studio manager to see how things have gone this morning, to get feedback, and then to discuss upcoming projects and tasks for the rest of the day and ahead. In addition to helping break-down the studio this evening, I learn that tomorrow we will be heading out to set up for an off-site accoustic recording.

3.00PMThe second session of the day is a vocal session and again I join the engineers to help. I’m given the task of settting up the pop filters, and checking the microphone levels are right. Last minute alterations are made to one of the verses of one of the osngs and its great to see the creative process in real-time.

7.00PM – We wrap up the session, say goodbye to the artists, and begin cleaning up the studios. I’m given feedback on the day, while putting the equipement and cables away.

9.00PM – Tonite there is an industry event that the team have been invited to. I have a busy morning tomorrow, so decide to go for an hour, and it turns out to be a great party and networking event.

10.30PM – I decide to say my goodbyes and head home. Its been a busy but great day! Tomorrow it all begins again.
