Interning at an online music magazine can be an exciting and fulfilling experience for those looking to break into the music journalism industry. Working for an online music magazine often requires interns to be self-motivated and adaptable, as the industry is fast-paced and constantly changing. BeatBrdg works with music media publications across print, digital and online media, and regularly places students into short and longer-term intern assignments.

So what does a typical day as an intern look like at a music magazine? We asked undergraduate students and 2023 Beatbrdg interns Michael and Lauren for their take to find out more.

Morning

At the beginning of each day, Lauren starts with a team meeting, where she is briefed on upcoming deadlines and editorial priorities. These meetings can be a great opportunity for interns to share their ideas and opinions on articles, reviews, and features that they would like to contribute to. Interns are given the chance to pitch ideas and participate in discussions, which can help them gain valuable experience in content development and editorial processes.

Mid-Morning

During the day, interns work on a variety of tasks, depending on their specific role. While Lauren is assigned to research and write articles, Michael’s focus is on social media management, marketing, and editing. Writing album reviews is a popular task among interns, as it allows them to listen to new music before it is released and share their thoughts with readers, something Lauren began doing at her student newspaper. Interns may also be assigned to interview musicians and attend concerts and music events.

“Busy Days and Lots of deadlines. I Loved It!”

Afternoon

Michael continues working on the magazine’s social media platforms, creating and curating content for platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and working to engage with followers by responding to comments and messages. Social media management can be a fun and creative task for interns, as it allows them to showcase their personality and style while representing the magazine.

Highlights

One of the most valuable aspects of interning at an online music magazine is the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals in the industry. Internship mentors and staff writers / editors provide guidance and support to interns to help them succeed in their tasks. Interns also have access to valuable resources like industry events, workshops, and networking opportunities.

Why Do It?

Interning at an online music magazine can be a valuable stepping stone to a career in music journalism, and provide invaluable insight into what working in music media is really like. The skills and experiences gained can be applied to future jobs in media, public relations, and music industries. As intern Michael Lee puts it, “Interning here has given me so much insight into the music industry and has opened up doors I never thought possible.”
